That flashback to Kakashi teaching Team 7 about teamwork showed how far they have come even if the whole trip was just a bunch of silly survival mistakes in the woods

Naruto was acting like he never went on a real mission before and I really could not believe he was struggling with a basic map while the little kids actually knew what they were doing

I feel like the writers forgot Naruto literally fought monsters because he was terrified of a falling rock and it made my head hurt watching him lead those academy kids

Konohamaru basically had to save the day while Naruto tripped over rocks and it was kind of funny but also pretty sad considering how much Naruto has actually survived by now

Watching the kids use teamwork to get through the night was sweet but the writing felt a bit lazy with how they handled the survival mechanics

The way Konohamaru carried the team during the rough parts makes sense why he respects Naruto so much even when his hero is being an idiot

There was some good growth for Naruto when he realized he has to actually take responsibility for others, even if the rest of the episode was forgettable.

The survival training was basically just a bunch of bickering and it felt like a waste of time compared to seeing the other genin teams progress

The dynamic between Naruto and the little kids was actually pretty interesting to me, because it felt like a weird preview of what he might be like as an actual teacher one day.

This filler was really average and I think the kids would have learned more from almost any other ninja in the village Naruto barely knows how to survive in the woods without a ramen shop nearby and seeing him struggle to teach basic skills was kind of painful to watch even if the heart to heart moment was totally okay

You can skip this one if you are looking for plot but the flashback to Kakashi and the bells while they were sharing food was a nice touch

That part where they suddenly got super strength to lift that massive rock felt so out of place for a simple survival mission and it really ruined the grounded feeling of the episode

Konohamaru calling out Naruto for being reckless was the highlight and it really shows how much he is turning into his own ninja

I honestly got a kick out of Naruto trying to lead even if he was kind of a mess during the training

Just skip this one if you want to get back to the actual story because Naruto acting this stupid is just painful to watch

Konohamaru losing faith in his idol felt a bit sudden, yet seeing him step up to lead Moegi and Udon was a nice touch for his character growth. The survival exercise was mostly a miss.

Seeing Moegi and Udon realize that Naruto is not actually a genius was pretty funny and they should probably just follow Konohamaru instead

I honestly have mixed feelings about this one because seeing Naruto act so incompetent after everything he has been through is frustrating, but the bond he has with the kids is still sweet. It is filler so you cannot expect too much and the animation is actually decent for a side story about getting lost in the forest.

Watching Naruto struggle with basic map reading was such a bore fest and the whole survival challenge just felt like a waste of time

That talk at the end between Naruto and Konohamaru really got to me and it almost made the slow pacing worth it

EPISODE CONTEXT

Sitting at episode 158 of 220, this is a standalone filler bridging the gap between the 'Curry of Life' arc and the upcoming 'Bounty Hunter from the Wilderness' storyline. It carries no narrative weight for the overarching plot and functions purely as a character-driven interlude. Safe to skip for viewers focused on progression, but harmless fun for those along for the ride through Naruto's extended filler stretch.
