Kakashi's ANBU days were so much bleaker than I'd pictured, and what really resonated with me was how relentlessly Guy and Asuma tried to pull him from that dark place. They just wouldn't let him push them away, and I think that steadfast friendship was honestly the lifeline he desperately needed to become the caring sensei we all know.
