I was seriously cheering for Yamato when he put those villagers in their place; like, come on, Hotaru's just trying her best and they were being such jerks. It just makes me wonder if Yamato sees a bit of himself in her, or maybe he's just got a soft spot for people getting unfairly ganged up on.
