Synopsis

Fifth-grader Subaru Hoshikawa stopped going to school after his astronaut father disappeared in space. He's not rebellious or troubled, just quietly grieving, spending his nights stargazing with his dad's old glasses. Then one night, those glasses let him see something nobody else can: an alien made of radio waves crash-landing in his world, claiming to know where his father is. The catch is that a lot of other aliens want this guy dead, and the only way to fight them is for Subaru and the alien, War-Rock, to literally fuse into a superhero called Rockman. From there, the show expands into a world where radio waves are the infrastructure of daily life, and Rockman can travel along that invisible network like a signal bouncing between towers. It's a clever sci-fi premise that the show actually commits to, not just window dressing. If you grew up with MegaMan NT Warrior, this feels like a spiritual successor with a more emotionally grounded lead. Fans of early Digimon Tamers will also recognize that specific flavor of a lonely kid finding unexpected partnership. The action is solid for a 2006 TV series, but what keeps it going across 55 episodes is Subaru himself, a kid processing real loss who slowly, reluctantly, starts letting people back in. It's not trying to reinvent anything. It's just a well-built adventure about grief and growing up, wrapped in radio-wave battles.
