hearing about his little sister completely broke my heart. he was just a child with absolutely no one to lean on, and hearing him call himself a cuckoo bird is so genuinely depressing.

diving into the protagonist's tragic childhood elevates the narrative significantly. comparing his survival within the adoptive family to a cuckoo bird is a devastatingly poignant metaphor that recontextualizes his entire character.

this reminds me a lot of chihayafuru but like so much better. when they started touching on his flashbacks it completely changed the vibe. the transition was done really well tho. but i feel so bad for him having to go through all of that alone at such a young age

Rei picks up Momo from school, acting as an older brother. We are given more of his backstory, of his family before the tragedy, and of his adoptive family. Children stuck in situations where no one is at fault.

What was meant to be a lighthearted day of doing a favor for a friend, ends up stirring deep scarred memories from within Kiriyama, and from that, we get to relieve and understand a bit about his past, his family, and how he ended up under a family of shogi players.

Now, they are starting to share more of Rei's past. It's heartbreaking, honestly, to be just a kid in that kind of situation. He was just trying to live :(

The episode is more about his mental state. It feels heavy and a little uncomfortable but in a real way. There is not much action but the feelings are strong.

The details in this episode really moved me because the story was so deep. I really felt what it was like to be Rei at that time.

What a lore-heavy episode. This episode is really sad, and everyone, not only Rei, is truly pitiable. But it also shows how strong his character is. Overall, a nice, slow episode—the design and style are great, the narration is amazing, and the development is interesting.
