this show explores feelings that hit so close to home for me. it is definitely heavy and can be painful to watch sometimes, but there is also a very comforting, nostalgic melancholy to it.

the series demands significant emotional bandwidth from its audience, exploring heavy themes of depression and anxiety with raw, unflinching honesty. the musical direction remains consistently superlative throughout these heavier sequences.

this episode is definitely a heavy watch, it drains you emotionally. but whoever the musical director is for this show, i literally need to kiss their forehead bc the soundtrack has been nothing but perfect

Rei begins to feel more comfortable with the Kawamotos as he realizes his home is far more empty than he once realized. After his next match with a man who gives one chills, Rei runs into someone who causes his blood to boil.

The new year comes and with it a new set of matches await Kiriyama and among then, one of the most important tournaments the Shishi-ou Tournament. With strong opponents to face, and someone that Kiriyama absolutely cannot afford to lose, the second half of 3-gatsu starts.

A character development for Rei, finally! He now has something that he should work hard on. These Kawamoto sisters are such a good influence on him.

It turns out the shogi game looks exciting. Although there's a bit of tension between Rei and Goto, Mr. Koda's presence really improves the atmosphere.

combines warmth and sadness again. The sisters make him laugh but his problems never go away. The difference is very real.

What an intense and interesting development. What exactly is their relationship? Rei getting mad over it really makes this episode feel more complicated. Overall, an interesting episode—the lore gets deeper, the story is great, and the style and animation are cute.
