Episode Context

Coming directly off Godai's bold confession of love to Kyoko, Episode 9 wastes no time complicating things by introducing Shun Mitaka as a legitimate romantic rival, charismatic, confident, and everything Godai isn't. This marks the true beginning of the series' central love triangle, a dynamic that will drive much of Maison Ikkoku's emotional and comedic storytelling across its 96-episode run. The groundwork laid here pays dividends for dozens of episodes to come.
