Synopsis

In a tranquil neighborhood of Tokyo, seven students are avoiding going to school—hiding in their darkened bedrooms, unable to face their family and friends—until the moment they find the mirrors in their bedrooms are shining. At a single touch, they are pulled from their lonely lives into a wondrous castle straight out of a Grimm's fairy tale. This whimsical place, oddly lacking in food and running water but full of electrical sockets, is home to a petulant girl in a mask, named Wolf Queen and becomes their playground and refuge during school hours. Hidden within the walls, they're told there's a key that will grant one wish, as well as a set of clues to find it. But there's a catch: the key must be found by the end of the school year and they must leave the premises by five o'clock each day or else suffer a fatal end. As time passes, a devastating truth emerges: only those brave enough to share their stories will be saved. And so they begin to unlock each other's stories: how a boy is showered with more gadgets than love; how another suffers a painful and unexplained rejection, and how a girl lives in fear of her predatory stepfather. As they struggle to abide by the rules of the game, a moving story unfolds, of seven characters trapped in a cycle of misunderstanding and loneliness, who are ultimately set free by the power of friendship, empathy, and sacrifice. I honestly didn't expect this movie to hit as hard as it did. At first, it feels like a simple fantasy story about a girl named Kokoro who stops going to school because of bullying and anxiety. One day, a glowing mirror in her room transports her to a mysterious castle where she meets six other teenagers who all have their own struggles. The movie slowly reveals why each of them ended up there, and that's what made it so interesting to watch. What I liked most was how realistic the characters felt. None of them are perfect, and they all deal with loneliness in different ways. Some are quiet, some act cheerful to hide their problems, and some are carrying really heavy emotional baggage. Watching them slowly become friends felt natural and believable. It never felt forced. The mystery surrounding the castle and the key kept me interested throughout the movie, but the emotional moments were definitely the strongest part. As more secrets are revealed, especially towards the final act, everything starts connecting together in a really satisfying way. There were several scenes that genuinely made me feel emotional because the movie handles topics like bullying, depression, isolation, and friendship with a lot of care. Visually, the movie is beautiful. The castle itself feels magical, while the real-world scenes have a softer and more grounded atmosphere that matches the characters' feelings. The soundtrack also does a great job supporting the emotional scenes without being overly dramatic. The only reason I wouldn't give it a perfect score is because the pacing can feel a little slow during the middle section. Some scenes take their time building relationships, which works for the story, but younger viewers looking for constant action might find parts of it dragging. Overall, this was a surprisingly heartfelt movie that combines fantasy and real-life struggles really well. It's the kind of story that reminds you how important it is to have people who understand what you're going through. By the end, I felt attached to the characters and genuinely wanted things to work out for them.

The whole idea for the story is solid. 7 teenager being drawn into a magical castle and the quest for a wish, apparently with no reason as to why they were selected. The pace is so fast that, honestly, it makes it difficult to emotionally connect with all the character, and having 7 main-characters feels a bit too much, it could've been 3 of them and that would have been perfect. However, the movie deals and depict bullying with respect but still with accuracy, I do believe that there are some thing that could've been better, like the ending or the foreshadowing, but I still liked the premise, the characters and the beauty of finding safe spaces in others.
