Synopsis
A young girl wanders into a forest full of spirits and meets a boy in a mask who saves her, but he can never be touched by a human, or he'll disappear forever. That's the setup for Hotarubi no Mori e, and in just 45 minutes, this movie will quietly devastate you. Six-year-old Hotaru Takegawa stumbles into Gin's world during a summer visit to her grandfather's house. Gin is a spirit bound to the forest, gentle and warm but literally untouchable. Despite this, they become friends, and every summer Hotaru returns. She grows older. He doesn't. Their bond deepens into something neither of them can fully act on, and that gap, the space between two hands that can never meet, carries the entire emotional weight of the film. Brain's Base nails the atmosphere here. The forest feels alive and dreamlike, with soft light filtering through the trees and Makoto Yoshimori's soundtrack doing exactly what it needs to, sitting in the background until it suddenly hits you right in the chest. The whole thing has this gentle, melancholic quality that never tries too hard but stays with you for days. If you liked Natsume's Book of Friends for its quiet beauty, or The Girl Who Leapt Through Time for its bittersweet romance, this is in that same lane. It's a short watch, barely feature length, but it says more about love and impermanence than most full series manage. Keep tissues nearby.

Walaupun durasinya termasuk singkat untuk ukuran movie, tapi alur cerita dan pace tetap dikemas dengan apik. Aku tidak merasa kebosanan saat menontonnya. Tidak banyak yang bisa dikatakan mengenai perkembangan karakter kecuali karakter Gin, yang ternyata mengidamkan sesuatu.
From its opening moments, Hotarubi no Mori He quietly lets you sense where it is heading, yet it still makes you tear when it gets there. At just over 40 minutes, its rhythm feels delicate, intimate, and deeply effective.

The movie is quite short that it feels like how summer passes by every year. Its storyline focuses on Gin and Hotaru's unique friendship and longing, leaving several emotions and curiosity to future when reaching the end of the movie.
Painfully good. Watching a sob movie is good for the soul~ this highlights the familiar feeling of going back to your hometown and picking up what you left off. For Hotaru, going back means seeing Gin again. As they journey in life, their extraordinary bond gets challenged.
Amazing storyline, much Japanese culture based, and INCREDIBLY SAD. Definitely worth watching at least once.
