Set in wartime Japan, "In This Corner of the World" chronicles the life of Suzu Urano as she navigates love, loss, and resilience amidst the devastation of World War II.

📖 SYNOPSIS

Growing up on the outskirts of Hiroshima in the early 1940s, Suzu Urano is a dreamy, art-loving girl with her head half in the clouds. At 18, she's married off to a man she barely knows and moves to Kure, a naval port city, where she has to figure out how to be a wife, a daughter-in-law, and a functioning adult — all while Japan is slowly being crushed by war. This movie from MAPPA isn't really about battles or politics though. It's about how you stretch rations to make something edible, how you patch clothes until there's nothing left to patch, how you keep drawing pictures and cracking jokes even when air raid sirens become background noise. Suzu's not a hero in any dramatic sense. She's just a person trying to hold onto normal life while the world falls apart around her, and that's exactly what makes it hit so hard. The animation has this soft, hand-drawn quality that almost feels like watercolor sketches coming to life — it fits Suzu's artistic perspective perfectly and gives the whole film an intimacy that polished CGI could never replicate. If you've seen Grave of the Fireflies or The Wind Rises, this lives in that same emotional territory, but it has more warmth and humor running through it, which honestly makes the gut punches land even harder when they come. It's a 2016 seinen movie adapted from a manga, and it earned its awards. Just keep tissues nearby.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love slow-burn historical dramas about ordinary civilians surviving wartime Japan
MAPPA's hand-drawn animation style with a nostalgic watercolor aesthetic appeals to you
Suzu's quiet resilience and her journey adapting to an arranged marriage sounds engaging
You prefer emotional weight built through everyday moments—not battle sequences or action

❌ SKIP IF...

You want fast-paced war drama—this film lingers on cooking, chores, and daily routines
Underdeveloped side characters bother you—the focus stays tightly on Suzu's perspective
You prefer tight narrative structure—the storytelling can feel episodic and loosely connected
