Hodong Wangjawa Laglang Gongju (2022)
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Shattered by the death of his closest friend Songra, Prince Hodong of Koguryo finds that grief hardens into something dangerous — a burning need for revenge against the State of Rangnang. So he travels straight into enemy territory, which is already a bold move, but things get complicated fast when politics and personal feelings start pulling him in opposite directions. This is a 2022 animated movie from SEK Studios, and it draws from actual ancient Korean history to tell a story about love caught in the gears of war between kingdoms. The animation has this rich, traditional style that really sells the historical setting — it doesn't look like most things you've seen recently, and that's part of its charm. What makes it stick is how Hodong's personal vendetta collides with his growing connection to the Rangnang princess. It's not just battlefield drama; it's about what happens when duty and desire point in completely different directions, and there's real weight to the choices these characters face. If you've ever been into shows like Red Hawk: Weapon of Death or Gaksital for their blend of historical Korean conflict and emotionally driven characters, this hits a similar nerve but through animation. Fans of Hello, Jeon Woo-chi will also appreciate the folkloric Korean storytelling here. It's a quieter, more emotional watch than you might expect — less spectacle, more sacrifice.
