📖 SYNOPSIS
A stranger with no memory of who he is wanders into 1863 Kyoto and gets taken in by the Mibu Roushigumi — the group that would eventually become the Shinsengumi, one of the most famous samurai organizations in Japanese history. Vice-commander Sōji Okita gives him the name Jinsuke Tachikawa and basically says, "you're one of us now." From there, Jinsuke has to figure out who he was while navigating the violent political chaos of the Bakumatsu era, where loyalists and reformists are literally killing each other in the streets of Kyoto.
The hook here is the amnesia angle layered on top of real historical events. Jinsuke isn't just piecing together his own past — he's watching history unfold around him in real time, and the show treats that history with genuine care. The relationship between Jinsuke and Okita anchors the whole thing emotionally, giving you something personal to hold onto while the bigger political picture gets increasingly messy.
If you liked Hakuouki's take on the Shinsengumi but want something with a grittier edge, or if Rurouni Kenshin's Bakumatsu flashbacks were your favorite parts, this is worth your time. Fans of Kaze Hikaru will recognize the era and the attention to period detail. The soundtrack by Shigeru Kishida adds a lot of weight to the action sequences and the quieter moments alike. It's a solid historical action TV series that doesn't rush its character work.
