EPISODE REVIEWS

The first episode and the first scene are already straight-up brutality. The character creation is old-style, but the background or settings art is great. There are animation drops now and then. Good thing that the sound design is great. This episode also has its funny moments.

Episode Context

This is the true beginning, no prior episodes precede it, and the season has 26 episodes ahead structured across multiple self-contained 'chapters.' This episode opens the 'Spirited Away by the Demon' chapter, the first arc, and functions entirely as a character and world setup before the mystery machinery kicks in. Episode 2, 'The Secret,' is where Higurashi begins revealing the darkness underneath Hinamizawa's idyllic surface.
