Finally some proper Tao training and it's satisfying to watch. Chobei's deal with Rien is fascinating and unsettling. Mei's lore dump about the island is dense but genuinely interesting worldbuilding.

With Gabimaru back to his senses, he along with the others begin training in order to combat the Tensen and to hone their ability to use Tao. The episode has less action and there is more emphasis on the lore regarding the origins of the island.

Combat emphasizes the balance between rigid technique and adaptive strategy. Fighters test whether sticking to established methods or evolving mid-battle yields the advantage, with observation, counter-adjustments, and timing determining control of the encounter.

Okay the lore drop was a LOT but Mei finally explaining the island's origins made it worth it. Gabimaru training the squad using them as punching bags is peak comedy. Pacing is fast almost too fast, but the Shugen arrival at the end? My jaw dropped. o_O

Didn’t expect them to reveal everything about the island and the Tensen’s creation and origins so soon. It feels a bit rushed.

Episode 3 is mostly about Gabimaru’s practice fight, and it’s awesome to watch him move so fast and stay cool under pressure. You get to see how skilled he is and how he handles the training. It’s tense but fun to watch him show off.

This episode had some important answers about the Tensen and the island, which serve as excellent worldbuilding. We learn that every creature there has a purpose. And we learn that gabimaru's will to fight is just to meet her wife finally.

Crazy plot twist on how choubei in agreement with Rien (although he's just play along) but still, choubei helping Rien to create elixir of life. And finally, the shugen has arrive on the island!

After recovering Gabimaru’s lost memories, he started to train his tao together with the other survivors. Meanwhile, a new group of samurais and prisoners arrived on the island. Will they be of any help or just another source of tao? Find out in the next episode!

Great emotional depth, blending the “bullets and roses” arc
Although violent, emotional & introspective moments are well balanced. Gabimaru’s struggles post memory loss & battles with self-identity drive the story arc forward, making the series feel more than just a survival test

I love this show man, It’s built around systematic contrast, just like the title suggests. It explores broader ideas too, like life and death being intertwined rather than opposites.

EPISODE CONTEXT

Coming off Episode 2's reality-bending confrontations and Gabimaru's internal reckoning, 'Immutability and Change' serves as a critical bridge episode—deepening backstories and laying essential groundwork before the Tensen conflict escalates. At episode 3 of 12, the season is transitioning out of its setup phase and into the rising action that will define its middle stretch. Expect the revelations here to pay off significantly as the group's alliances and strategies solidify in the episodes ahead.
