Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube

IS THIS WORTH WATCHING? Here are my points to consider If you have read the OG source and expecting some heavy fan service in this anime, then you would be disappointed If you have watched the 1990's anime version and also expecting some fan service in this anime, then you would be disappointed yet again There’s a gap in my review timeline because I took some time to read the original source material and watched some episode of the 90's anime. After doing so, I must say that I think the anime stands well on its own without the fan service. If it's included, then it would be highly controversial The studio did an excellent job of preserving the nostalgic ’90s feel of the anime while seamlessly blending it with modern animation techniques The animation mostly doesn't looked like it has been half-assed The anime does contain some gory elements, but the studio did a good job of toning them down It may not be as good as Spooky Kitaro, but it serves as a solid alternative for fans looking for a similar experience.

The episode opens as though the previous events have been reset, or at least temporarily put on hold. Nube eventually learns one of Remugyo's weaknesses, providing a glimmer of hope against the seemingly overwhelming threat. The episode also leans on a familiar trope, which isn't too surprising considering the series is an older one. While it may feel predictable by today's standards, I think it fits the storytelling style of its time 🤔

A familiar villain from the previous episode returns, and the episode title makes their identity fairly easy to predict. On top of that, a new and even greater threat makes its debut, one that seems far more dangerous than the returning villain. The suspense keeps building the whole time, and just when it feels like things are about to explode, the episode ends with a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more.

The yokai featured in this episode belongs to the same category as those introduced in episodes 3 and 5. Interestingly, this yokai is part of Japanese folklore used to frighten children into being more responsible with their possessions. If you have watched Nuraryon no Mago, you may also recognize the phenomenon associated with this yokai. Going into the episode, I expected a darker tone, but it ended up being far more lighthearted than I had anticipated.

This episode takes on a much lighter tone, yet it still delivers a strong emotional punch. The featured yokai this time is, in my opinion one of the more recognizable and less threatening figures in Japanese folklore. Interestingly, its origin closely follows the traditional folktales associated with it, which is a creative touch. This episode is a breath of fresh air after the darker episodes that came before it.

This episode introduces another of Nube's students, and he's just as quirky as the rest of the cast. The supernatural phenomenon featured this time is particularly unusual, blending modern elements with the supernatural. It feels somewhat similar to the one in Ep 6, although I haven't come across anything quite like it before. As for the animation, there is one brief moment that looks a little off but it's so minor that it's easy to miss.

This episode introduces a very popular yokai along with a new character in the series. The story of how she first met Nube is pretty interesting, and her role adds extra spice to the story. The animation in this episode captures the charm of classic anime while incorporating modern techniques that give it a fresh and updated look. P.S. Given that Nube originally featured elements of fan service, the studio opted to preserve Yukime's yokai outfit rather than redesigning it for the adaptation 🤔

This episode is quite different from the previous ones because the " threat " isn't technically a yokai, but an onryo rooted in modern urban legend. The episode is packed with horror and suspense plus the ending is incredibly satisfying. The episode also introduces another function of Nube's left arm, adding an intriguing layer to his abilities.
