READTHROUGH
Rakka's Descent
A girl, later known as Rakka, floats through a void of sky, her white dress a stark contrast to the darkness. She is falling, yet she feels no fear, a strange calm possessing her. Even when a black crow attempts to slow her descent, its efforts are met with her tranquil observation. The world below is a hazy green, a promise or a threat she drifts towards, seemingly resigned.
The Cocoon's Discovery
Reki, a Haibane of Old Home, walks through the dusty corridors, a cigarette hanging from her lip. She hears a sound, a disturbance in the quiet decay of the building. Behind a heavy wooden door, she discovers an enormous, pulsing cocoon, glowing faintly. This is no ordinary birth; it is something ancient and deeply significant, sending Reki running for help.
Preparations at Old Home
Outside, Hikari and Kana, two other Haibane, cycle past giant wind turbines, their small wings fluttering. They eventually arrive at Old Home, where a bulletin board warns the younger Haibane, the 'Little Ones,' away from the cocoon room. Inside, Reki sternly enforces the 'Keep Out' tape, herding curious children back to their rooms. The community buzzes with a shared anticipation, a mixture of the sacred and the mundane.
Waiting for the Hatching
The older Haibane, including Nemu and Kuu, gather around the massive cocoon. They marvel at its size and rapid growth, noting its changing colors. Reki takes charge, coordinating their efforts, recognizing the communal responsibility that comes with a new arrival. The cocoon hardens, turning ash grey, and the girls wonder aloud about the person forming within.
Inside the Cocoon
Within the cocoon, Rakka is suspended in a warm, green-tinged fluid, experiencing a profound sense of weightlessness. She feels a pressure, registering light and sound from the outside world. The muffled voices of Reki and the others pierce her tranquil state, confusing her. She reaches out, touching the interior wall of her temporary prison, a silent acknowledgment of her impending release.
Rakka's Birth
The cocoon begins to vibrate, then crack, causing the assembled Haibane to step back. Reki uses long wooden sticks to maintain distance, her expression focused. With a sudden, violent rupture, the cocoon shatters, releasing a torrent of warm fluid onto the floor. Rakka is expelled, dazed and gasping, into the arms of the waiting Haibane. It is a messy, chaotic entry into the world, far from serene.
Awakening
Rakka awakens later in a clean, bright bedroom, tucked into a soft bed. She looks around, confused by the rustic furniture and the peaceful courtyard outside her window. Her dream of falling begins to fade, its details blurring into the edges of her memory. She feels a strange sensation in her back, but her exhaustion prevents her from investigating, leaving her in a state of quiet disorientation.
A Name and a New Life
The bedroom door opens, and the Haibane girls enter, bearing food and warm greetings. Rakka is struck by the sight of their halos and wings, a reality she now shares. They explain their shared origin from cocoons and the universal memory loss that accompanies their rebirth. Reki asks Rakka about her dream, and based on the sensation of falling, officially names her Rakka, meaning 'to fall.'
The Stubborn Halo
Hikari produces a metal mold, remarkably like a donut pan, and uses it to forge Rakka's halo. A quiet chant accompanies the creation of a glowing ring of light, a mystical process grounded in domesticity. Yet, when Hikari tries to place the halo, it refuses to float, dropping onto Rakka's hair. Reki improvises, tying it in place with a white cloth, explaining that new Haibane bodies need time to bond with their halos.
The Unscalable Walls
The other girls depart, leaving Rakka alone with Reki, who sits by the window and lights another cigarette. Reki explains more about the Haibane world, revealing that they are forbidden from climbing the high stone walls surrounding their city. Rakka listens, a sense of isolation and mystery deepening around her new home. The rules are clear, but their reasons remain hidden.
The Sprouting
A sharp, stabbing pain erupts in Rakka's shoulder blades, causing her to panic. Reki calmly instructs her to lie face down, preparing for the imminent sprouting of Rakka's wings. Rakka clutches the bedsheets, her breathing shallow as the pain intensifies, the biological transformation commencing. Her skin tears open, and two bloody, feathered wing buds push through her flesh, eliciting a piercing scream of agony. Reki holds her, offering quiet comfort, a stoic midwife to this brutal birth. With a final surge, the wings emerge, raw and unformed, leaving Rakka completely exhausted.
Charcoal Wings and Lingering Questions
Reki meticulously cleans Rakka's new wings with a soft brush and warm water, explaining the vital need to prevent staining. She notes Rakka's wings are a unique charcoal grey, a rare beauty. Rakka, spent from the ordeal, asks if they will ever remember their past lives. Reki's sad reply confirms that the memories are gone, cementing the mystery at the heart of their existence.
Morning After
Rakka awakens the next morning, the intense pain replaced by a dull ache. She discovers her hair standing on end from static electricity, a peculiar effect of her halo. Tentatively, she moves her new wings, finding them surprisingly light and responsive. The other girls soon arrive, bursting into laughter at Rakka's wild hair. Rakka joins in, feeling a sense of peace and acceptance, finally welcomed into the Old Home community.
EPISODE REVIEWS

Na-intriga agad ako sa first scene! Wholesome pero may kaba. You can sense a darker story underneath. Pure cinema yung aesthetic... dreamy, nostalgic and that perfect vintage vibe na rare na ngayon. Ready na ako masaktan sa mystery na ‘to!

This anime is one of a kind; I've never seen anything like it. The interesting plot explores what kind of beings they are and why humans don't remember them. Although this story is about the young girl, it's exciting to watch the whole series and find out what's next.
