Episode 86 kicks off the Okita Mitsuba Arc, one of Gintama's most acclaimed character-driven storylines, shifting focus squarely onto the Shinsengumi's personal lives after the standalone Episode 85. It establishes the emotional groundwork, Mitsuba's visit, her engagement, and the buried tensions between Sougo and Hijikata, that Episode 87 will escalate further. Sitting at roughly the midpoint of the series' 201-episode run, this arc marks a turning point where Gintama demonstrates its capacity for sustained dramatic storytelling alongside its comedy roots.
