Episode Context

Episode 148 kicks off the Shinsengumi Death Game Arc, pivoting away from the Shinpachi and Kagura-focused training storyline of Episode 147 to spotlight Hijikata and Okita in an isolated, high-concept scenario. Sitting at roughly the 74% mark of the series' 201-episode run, this arc arrives deep enough into Gintama that the Shinsengumi dynamics are well-established, letting the show exploit that familiarity for both comedy and tension. The arc continues directly into Episode 149 as the deadly game escalates.
