Fushigi no Kuni de Alice to: Dive in Wonderland
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Kind of lost and drifting through college with no clear direction or real sense of purpose, Rise Azumino isn't exactly thriving. Then she finds an invitation her late grandmother left behind, and it pulls her into Wonderland. Not metaphorically. She literally ends up in Wonderland, where she meets a girl named Alice and starts bumping into all the familiar faces: the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat, the whole roster. But this isn't a straight retelling of Lewis Carroll. It's more like a personal journey wrapped in fairy tale chaos, where Rise has to figure out what she actually wants from life while navigating a world that runs on nonsense logic. P.A. Works handled the animation, and if you know their track record, you know this thing looks gorgeous. Toshiya Shinohara directed, and the theme song by SEKAI NO OWARI fits the dreamy, slightly off-kilter atmosphere really well. It's a movie, so it's a single self-contained sitting — no commitment anxiety. The vibe is somewhere between whimsical and melancholic, like stumbling through a beautiful dream you're not sure you want to wake up from. If you liked the surreal world-building in Alice in the Country of Hearts or the dark fairy tale energy of Pandora Hearts, this scratches a similar itch but with a more grounded emotional core. Fans of Märchen Mädchen's storybook aesthetic might also find something to connect with here. It's a quiet, strange little film about finding yourself in the last place you'd expect.
