From the New World Episode 14: Snowflakes

The emotional weight of the letters and the finality of the choices made in the snow feels great. It marks a permanent shift in the series where the childhood innocence is completely gone, replaced by a harsh reality that they can never turn back from. Trauma is building more.

Bro Satoru's grandmother is such a baddie, it's really fortunate she favours Saki that much - girls sitting with Protagonist protection pro max. Also, again, Satoru is much more likeable. Makes sense what Maria was trying to say.

The knowledge shared by Tomiko and the reach of her political power are what keep me invested. You really need a lot of patience to finish an anime like this, but those lore drops make the slow burn worth it.
