๐ SYNOPSIS
A river swallows two kids whole, and the first thing they hear on the other side is that they're dead. That's how this movie starts. Ryusuke, a junior high student from Tokyo, visits his cousin Tomomi in Tokushima over summer break. They go out to the Anabuki River, get swept away by the current, and sink to the bottom โ only to be pulled out by a dragon and brought before a mysterious old man. He drops the news pretty bluntly: they're dead. But there's a catch. He can send them back to the living if they explore the spirit world and figure out what their lives are actually supposed to mean. What follows is this eerie, contemplative journey through a spirit realm that looks like 1960s Japan, full of unsettling encounters and quiet, surreal moments that stick with you. The whole thing has a hand-drawn warmth mixed with modern digital effects that gives it a distinct visual identity. If you liked the atmosphere of Spirited Away โ that feeling of being lost in a world that's beautiful but slightly wrong โ this hits a similar nerve. There's also a Mushishi quality to it, where the supernatural isn't flashy but deeply felt. It's a single movie from HS Pictures Studio, so it's a one-sitting commitment. The tone leans more introspective than action-heavy, exploring what it means to be alive through the lens of two cousins who technically aren't anymore. Worth your time if you're into spiritual fantasy with real emotional weight.
