the design of the new shinigami is genuinely so peak and i love how their personality is the complete opposite of how intimidating they look. do not judge a book by its cover truly. watching someone completely unexpected make that devastating deal sent me because i was in total shock for the entire rest of the episode

using the protagonist's father as the vehicle for an unexpected act of desperation is a structurally devastating choice. the buildup is handled with enough deliberate ambiguity to keep the audience genuinely uncertain until the last possible moment, which makes the loss hit significantly harder than a more telegraphed setup would have allowed.

i almost peed myself watching this episode because the tension never let up for a single second. and then it happened and i genuinely had to put my phone down for a moment. i was completely not prepared for that and the show just keeps doing this thing where it takes someone you cared about and TAKES THEM OUT with absolutely no warning.

A tragic, high-stakes episode where ideals clash with sacrifice. Soichiro’s final stand is both heroic and heartbreaking, as hesitation seals his fate. Dying in peace, convinced his son is innocent, delivers a powerful emotional punch that lingers far beyond the chaos and regret.

This looks getting more out of hand as the story continues and develops the new characters. However, they still show improvements and more exciting actions even L is not present anymore.

Sidoh introduction- goofy. He's entertaining, though.
Light really has lost all of his humanity with how he's planning to move forward in this situation.
Mello's real name drop was cool, and at the end of the day, though the ending was sad, at least they got to be at peace :')

Another Shinigami appeared to claim his Death Note back. Light again used the trick to exchange notebook ownership. Plotting to break in at the Mafia den. Light revealed Ryuk before his team and also convinced his father to make the eye deal to infiltrate the Mafia base.

Emotion takes center stage in this episode. The focus on family gives the story more weight, and the sacrifices feel genuine. It stands out as one of the more heartfelt moments in this part of the story.

Honestly didn’t expect Light to be this cold. Seeing him stay completely emotionless even when his own family is involved makes things feel way darker. At the same time, his counterattack is ruthless, and the tension just keeps building.

This episode is emotionally devastating. Soichiro Yagami’s decision to take the Shinigami Eye deal to save his daughter proves he’s the true hero of this story. His final moments, smiling because he believes in his son, are heartbreaking.

The pressure on the Yagami family is heartbreaking. Seeing Soichiro take the "Eye Deal" just to save his daughter and stop Mello shows how much of a hero he is. Light's cold reaction to his own father's sacrifice is just painful to see.

Completely cruel. In the line of duty, heartbreak. This episode is a heartbreaking homage to Soichiro Yagami. He meets a horrible end as a result of his sacrifice for The Shinigami Eyes, smiling as he passes away because he knows Light is pure. Light's manipulation was a masters.

Wow. This was a tough episode to watch. Instead of focusing on the rivalry, it focuses on how much it will cost, with it costing more than just morality, diplomacy, or politics. This is an issue that is deeper. AND that changes everything.

Light stays ice cold as always but this ep actually hits different on an emotional level. Soichiro goes all in and the payoff is gut wrenching. always been pro-Light but kinda hate him here💔

Light is bad, but he's good, so this episode is good

EPISODE CONTEXT

Positioned at episode 29 of 37, 'Father' follows 'Impatience,' where Light faced mounting pressure from Mello's operations, and directly precedes 'Justice,' which deals with the fallout of the events here. This episode marks a critical emotional turning point in the second half's Mello-versus-Light conflict, shifting the series from strategic maneuvering toward irreversible personal consequences that reshape the investigative team's dynamics heading into the final stretch.
