Synopsis
As a young kid, Junpei Murao fell in love with ballet, then spent years burying it under soccer, martial arts, and every "masculine" hobby he could find. After his father's death, he doubled down on being the tough guy everyone expected him to be. But when a transfer student named Miyako Godai catches him mid-leap and drags him to her mother's ballet studio, that buried passion claws its way back to the surface. There he meets Ruou, Miyako's cousin and a ballet prodigy who's technically brilliant but emotionally closed off, basically Junpei's opposite in every way that matters. What makes this 11-episode TV series work is how honestly it deals with Junpei's shame. Not in a melodramatic way, but in that quiet, gnawing way where you know what you want but can't let yourself want it. The ballet sequences are gorgeous, this is MAPPA, so the animation carries real weight and fluidity, but the emotional core is what sticks. It's a seinen, so it treats the subject matter with more nuance than you might expect from a show about a kid learning to dance. If you liked the artistic passion in Swan or the movement-driven energy of Tribe Cool Crew but wanted something more grounded and introspective, this hits that spot. It's really about a boy figuring out that the bravest thing he can do is stop pretending.

The ending to this series felt tragic yet hopeful. Junpei was a fantastic main character - easy to root for, multi-faceted and direct - and the ending he chose for himself was satisfying if somewhat unexpected. Luou's character arc was well finished as well. Highly recommend.
I have to say, MAPPA creative really carried this series. The animation and music makes it hard to look away from the screen as the characters emotionally clashed with others and themselves. The music directors must have deep understanding of classical music too in order to fit it with the scene perfectly. Junpei's growth as he moved on to the next stage of his life had us feeling moved for him. He lived life daringly, and his daringness is what captivates the characters and audience.
The heartbreak of not just Luou's background but the choice Junpei made for Luou's sake is heartbreaking. The visuals and music never fails to portray a beautifully sad tragedy that reels you into a story that really is a dramatization of stereotypical Asian parenting. Especially when followed with the conclusion of the love triangle.
This was a very emotionally intense episode. The subject matter was dark and gave us insight into just what Luou has gone through and why he is the way he is. The last scene was so raw and sets us up for an emotional and explosive end to this show.
This episode shows Junpei at a crossroads. He is offered an opportunity few dancers could ever hope for, but struggles with what that means for his relationships. Luou's character arc is set up for a dramatic conclusion here as well. Very interesting and provocative watch.
This episode was exciting from start to finish. Thoroughly enjoyable to watch Junpei meet his match in ballet through Natsuki and have a moment of pure enjoyment with her, and then to have his relationship with Miyako blossom as well. Paced and animated beautifully.
Luou's trauma it explored further all the while, while Junpei struggled with the pull of his future and his loved ones. Potential seeds are sowed in choosing who he wants to be while moving forward while Luou seemed to regress in contrast.
The love triangle is getting even spicier this episode with all sorts of conflict and dynamic being introduced. It was such a classic teen drama all the while we follow Junpei in his journey to get better at Ballet and expanding his and our horizon about it. The execution of the love drama was well done in the way there's no 'villain' in the conflict, simply teenagers being teenagers. A very youthful story.
The slice of life episode is truly endearing as the boys clashed, bond, and get to know each other. Their personality creates such an interesting dynamic between the friend group that it was fun to watch them gang out instead of a chore.
It's so good that despite the passion of his performance, there are still consequences to having acting for Junpei's personal feeling without regard to anyone else's. The opportunity to introduce new characters and the dynamics between them are refreshing and fun.
This episode was a charming and fun watch, but slightly less plot-relevant. It is more character-focused and shows Junpei thinking about where ballet can take him in the future. Technically skippable but highly recommended for the emotional journey and character development.
This episode brings us back down to earth after the ballet festival performance. It becomes clear that Junpei is still very much beginning his journey, and the episode creates a sense of excitement to see how he navigates that while developing a new respect for ballet as an art.
An incredible episode. The excitement and intrigue brought to the ballet performance by the characters and animation was a joy to watch. Junpei enjoying himself so much is just infectious, and Luou's raw emotion while dancing was so interesting to see.
This episode has a more classic sports anime feel, with Junpei entering his training arc. It establishes the position Junpei is in with regards to how far behind he is on the basics and his potential going forward. Less dramatic than previous episodes but still a great watch.
MAPPA really brought so much delight in the ballet performance. The buildup to the climatic scene of the ballet was so good and the unpredictable improv allows good tension in the story while also bring forth so much emotions to the perfomers involved. I love how the narrative acknowledges the fact Junpei's lack of basic is present but his passion and acting allows him to be on equal terms with other performers.
The way Junpei looked happy of being capable to dance ballet, his brimming with love and passion and it is such a satisfying feel to watch that I feel kudos needed to be shared to the animation, music, and VA really hit us with peak performance, including the growing rivalry between Luou and Junpei.
