📖 SYNOPSIS
Two interdimensional operatives from a 2-D universe get sent to our reality to prepare it for total conquest, but they immediately decide that dating cute guys is way more interesting than world domination. That's Compiler in a nutshell. Compiler and Assembler — named after programming concepts, naturally — are interdimensional operatives who ditch their flat existence the moment they discover what three dimensions have to offer. They shack up with a couple of regular dudes named Toshi and Nachi, and things are going pretty well until their former bosses get furious about the whole defection thing and start sending assassins to literally delete Earth from existence. It's only two episodes, so this is a quick watch from 1994 with character designs by Kia Asamiya, the manga artist behind Silent Möbius. The art has that sharp, clean retro OVA look that just hits different. The whole premise leans into computer terminology in a fun way — characters use abilities like "deletion" and "formatting" as actual weapons, which gives the action scenes a weird charm. Tonally, it's a mix of romantic comedy with sci-fi stakes, kind of like a compressed magical girlfriend setup where the girlfriends happen to be reality-warping programs. If you're into stuff like Video Girl Ai or Tenchi Muyo for the "otherworldly girl falls for ordinary guy" dynamic, or you just enjoy digging up quirky 90s OVAs, Compiler is worth the hour it takes to get through both episodes.
