The military logic here made no sense at all. Preemptively scorching the whole are was infinitely more destructive than just letting Zearth fight. Complete military miscalculation. What a disaster episode.

I've searched the manga for this specific episode and yeah it ended in a different way. Though I much prefer this episode than the manga one. Here it's redemption, in the manga it did not feel like it. But on the other note, I enjoyed both!

Episode Context

Coming directly off the revelations of 'Journey,' 'Snowscape' functions as the series' final exhale before the conclusion, gathering its remaining threads and characters for one last confrontation with the show's core themes. It bridges the accumulated grief and moral complexity of the entire season into position for the finale, 'Tale,' where the series' ultimate reckoning is expected to land.
