Synopsis

Meet Kyotaro Ichikawa, a middle schooler who reads murder encyclopedias and fantasizes about killing his classmates. Specifically, he fixates on Anna Yamada, the tall, gorgeous class idol everyone adores. He's convinced she's everything he hates. Then he catches her sneaking rice crackers in the library like a gremlin, and his whole worldview starts crumbling. That's the setup for Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu, and this movie compiles both TV seasons with new footage while continuing Ichikawa and Yamada's story past where the series left off. The charm here is watching a kid who thinks he's this edgy, misanthropic loner slowly realize he's just a shy boy with a crush. Anna, meanwhile, isn't the shallow popular girl archetype, but she's weird and sweet and oblivious in ways that keep catching Ichikawa off guard. Their dynamic builds through small, quiet moments rather than big dramatic confessions, and it's genuinely funny without forcing it. If you liked the slow-burn awkwardness of Kimi ni Todoke or the way Toradora! pairs opposites who bring out each other's real selves, this hits a similar spot. Shin-Ei Animation keeps the tone warm and grounded, letting the comedy and romance develop naturally through character details rather than plot contrivances. The movie format should make it a solid way to experience the whole arc in one sitting, especially with the added scenes filling in gaps.
