The Hunt in the Rain
The episode opens with the stark visual of bloodied corridors, rain-slicked and dark. Panicked Shinsengumi Members search frantically, their faces streaked with fear and sweat. Hijikata Toshizo, ever the pragmatist, deduces an inside job; the escape could not have happened otherwise. He sees the hand of a helper in the dark.
Serizawa's Aloof Solitude
Inside, laughter and sake flow freely among the celebrating Shinsengumi members, a stark contrast to the earlier scenes. Serizawa Kamo sits apart, a solitary figure observing the revelry. He muses on whether a 'swallow will fly,' his thoughts heavy with unspoken concerns, hinting at a deeper game in motion.
A Father's Regret
Serizawa confronts Nio, realizing his closest confidant may be trying to help him escape. He expresses a furious defiance against survival, questioning what would be left if he lived shamelessly. A harsh flashback shows him callously rejecting Tarou's Mother, declaring himself a 'warrior of the world.' Yet, a memory of a timid Tarou, his son, surfaces, leaving Serizawa with a complex, aching regret for a life he never allowed himself to live.
A Sudden Will to Live
Despite his previous defiance, Serizawa looks up at the stormy sky, a glint of desperate hope in his bloodied eye. "Live, I want to live," he says, a raw admission of humanity. He stands defiantly in the rain, a renewed resolve flickering within him. It is then that Hijikata appears, drawing his sword, poised to strike.
The Kaishakunin's Duty
A flashback reveals Serizawa as the kaishakunin, presiding over a somber seppuku. The man asks for a death worthy of Serizawa Kamo, and Serizawa, with closed eyes, fulfills his grim duty. Back in the present, Serizawa, now bleeding and in the rain, smiles broadly, a triumphant, almost manic expression. "Isn't this the future I most desired?" he asks, speaking to Kondo Isami.
Oume's Farewell
Saito Hajime somberly informs Oume of a friend's death. She clutches a knife, tears streaming, refusing to accept it. Saito, though frustrated, gently dispatches her, handing her an umbrella and telling her she must leave Kyoto for her own safety. Her lonely figure walking away in the downpour underscores the cost of the loyalties that bind these men.
Harada's Undying Loyalty
Saito entrusts Harada Sanosuke with tracking down the escaped Hirama. Harada, however, is consumed by a fierce, almost primal loyalty to Serizawa. He accuses Hijikata of not understanding Serizawa's true significance, calling his loss a "national catastrophe." In a flash of raw emotion, Harada charges Hijikata, only to be defeated, screaming in pain and frustration.
Saito's Burden
After Harada's defeat, Hijikata searches for Hirama in vain, losing him in the forest. Suddenly, Saito attacks Hijikata, injuring him and carrying him away. Saito resolves to bear a shared "burden of sin" to his grave, leaving Hijikata confused and in pain. The implication is that Saito is part of a larger, hidden plan, protecting Hijikata from an unseen consequence.
Kondo's Brutal Mentorship
Kondo Isami and Hijikata engage in a fierce sword fight amidst the rain-soaked rice fields. Kondo ruthlessly challenges Hijikata's resolve, criticizing his "weak approach." He pushes Hijikata to confront his feelings for Serizawa, to "spit out all regret." This is not a battle of enemies, but a brutal lesson in emptying oneself for a new path.
The Man Behind the Mask
Flashbacks illustrate Tarou's transformation from a timid boy to a lively Shinsengumi member, serving Serizawa and finding purpose. Saito reflects on Tarou's newfound spirit. Hijikata, battered but gaining insight, recalls the slight pause Serizawa took before appearing to others, realizing it was the moment he chose to become "Serizawa Kamo." He admits his admiration for this deliberate artifice, this public persona.
The Swallow's Secret
The fight between Kondo and Hijikata continues, Hijikata desperately clinging to his unwavering loyalty to Serizawa. Kondo, calm amidst the chaos, offers a cryptic but crucial piece of advice: "Hold your sword as short as possible." Hijikata is surprised, questioning the disadvantage. Kondo's final words about the single swallow and its specific "drawing" hints at a profound, almost mystical fighting technique.
Saito's Last Request
Saito turns to Kondo, his face grim, and makes a direct, surprising plea: "Save Tarou." Kondo is taken aback, confused by Saito's unexpected command. Saito then offers the same cryptic sword advice about the "swallow" and holding the blade short, urging Kondo to aim for the head. This suggests a desperate, strategic move to protect Tarou, even as Serizawa's fate is sealed.
The Finality of the Rain
The stormy night provides the backdrop for the final confrontation. Kondo and Hijikata clash, the "swallow" technique coming into play. Nio draws his sword, eyes glowing with intense resolve. Hijikata cries out in anguish and falls, defeated. Serizawa, now covered in blood but smiling, tells Kondo it's time to end it. Their swords meet one last time, and Serizawa falls, a triumphant, bloody smile etched on his face.
The Silent Aftermath
As Serizawa's body lies in the rain, Saito watches, tears welling but his expression stoic and unmoving. The scene fades to black, and the white kanji for 'Serizawa Kamo' appears, a solemn epitaph. The episode closes with the lingering image of a man who shaped his own destiny, even in death.
EPISODE REVIEWS

A tense, high-impact episode that accelerates key conflicts while tightening character focus. Momentum stays relentless as stakes peak, with sharp direction and emotional pressure building throughout. The closing beats land decisively, setting up a compelling transition forward.

Although the narrative has lots of substance, they could have balanced retelling past events or perspectives with the present's fight scenes some more.

The dialogue is starting to feel draggy. It's starting to look like they're stretching the fight's outcome by flooding backstories in here.
