A Rainy Challenge
The episode opens with the stark, chilling patter of rain, setting an immediate somber tone. Taro, under the eaves, watches with concern as Souji walks away, a discarded umbrella and a determined expression marking his path. This initial tension, framed by Taro's worried questions about the sedan chairs carrying the Mibu Roushi, hints at the fateful night to come. Souji's terse reply, and the ominous procession, speak of a gathering storm, both literal and metaphorical.
Kondou's Strategic Mercy
Away from the rain, Kondou Isami discusses Taro's loyalty to Serizawa Kamo with Soubei and Souji. Kondou recognizes the depth of Taro's devotion, calling him a child who should not die, showing a surprising compassion for their adversary. He instructs Souji to avoid outright force, believing Taro will yield when faced with overwhelming resolve rather than aggression. It is a shrewd calculation, balancing practicality with a sliver of mercy.
The Rain Duel
Back in the downpour, Souji stands before Taro, issuing a stark warning. "If you want to pass, you can do it by force. But don't say I didn't warn you if you die," Souji declares, his voice cold. Taro, eyes wide with fear, grips his sword, then draws it with grim determination. Souji's slight surprise and then a muttered curse toward Hijikata Toshizo show an unexpected depth, acknowledging Taro's true resolve and the unseen machinations guiding the moment.
The Infiltration
The setting shifts to Serizawa's mansion, where Hijikata, Taro, and Souji move with stealth. They shed their masks, a pragmatic decision by Taro to avoid unnecessary alarm if they are discovered. The sound of rain is a constant companion, emphasizing the clandestine nature of their mission. This quiet entry builds suspense, allowing the audience to anticipate the impending confrontation.
Oume's Escape
Inside, Souji encounters Oume, Serizawa's mistress, startling her awake. He silences her, then surprisingly offers her money and instructions to flee, to forget everything. Hijikata confirms this act of mercy is also a tactical move, ensuring Oume will not cause problems for them later. This brief interaction humanizes Souji, even as he participates in a deadly raid, and adds a layer of moral complexity to the mission.
The Countdown
Outside, Kondou Isami finalizes the plan with Souji, Yamanami Keisuke, and Sanosuke Harada. The cold instructions are given: spare Oume, kill the three men, and allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness. The chilling countdown from 100 underscores the precision and gravity of their purpose. As the number approaches zero, the tension becomes almost unbearable, leading to the thunderous burst into Serizawa's chamber.
Serizawa's Game
The attackers burst into the room, only to find Serizawa Kamo calmly waiting, holding a lit candle. He reveals he knew of their plan all along, even using Oume as bait, mocking their efforts. "I will crush your eyes," Serizawa declares, plunging the room into darkness and disorienting his attackers. His maniacal laughter echoes, a cruel testament to his psychological dominance, as Souji realizes they have fallen into a trap.
Desperation and Cruelty
In a shocking turn, Oume, driven by terror or loyalty, stabs Serizawa in the back. But Serizawa's resilience is horrifying; he merely uses her act as an excuse for sadistic torture. He twists Oume's head, forcing her to scream, a horrifying display of his capacity for cruelty. Kondou Isami, grim-faced, instructs Souji to endure the sight, stating they must witness this to understand true strength.
Overwhelming Force
The Mibu Roushi launch their combined attack, but Serizawa Kamo is simply too powerful. He deflects Souji's blade, disarms Yamanami Keisuke, and casually parries Sanosuke Harada's spear. With a brutal kick, he sends Kondou Isami flying, leaving him helpless. Serizawa stands triumphant, declaring, "All who defy me will be crushed," as Hijikata watches, hidden and anguished.
A Life for a Lesson
Ignoring Yamanami Keisuke's desperate dagger attack, Serizawa Kamo brutally kicks him, then stabs him with his own blade. Yamanami dies, his eyes wide in horror, his loyalty to Serizawa repaid with betrayal. Serizawa continues to mock the remaining, defeated fighters, raising his sword to deliver a killing blow to Souji. The scene culminates in flashes of white and black, signaling an inescapable end.
Taro's Oath, Serizawa's End
A poignant flashback to Taro's childhood vow to protect those he cares about interrupts the violence, adding depth to his earlier stand. Returning to the present, Souji lies wounded, as Serizawa Kamo mocks his loyalty, preparing to strike. Yet, in a twist of fate, Souji manages to wound Serizawa, who stumbles backward. The formidable Serizawa finally falls to the ground, defeated, his reign of terror concluded with a grim finality.
The Shinsengumi is Born
Hijikata Toshizo surveys the bloody scene, his face etched with grim regret. The bodies of Serizawa Kamo, Oume, and Yamanami Keisuke lie still, silent testament to the brutal night. Souji, Kondou Isami, and Sanosuke Harada are all wounded, shaken by the conflict. Hijikata declares Serizawa died a foolish death, but as a man, before proclaiming a new era: "From now on, the Mibu Roushi will be called the Shinsengumi."
A Bloody Resolve
The newly christened Shinsengumi stand united, though their faces reveal the heavy cost of their victory. Souji's tears mingle with the rain, a heartbreaking symbol of the night's despair and relief, as he then picks up Serizawa's discarded katana. Kondou Isami and Sanosuke Harada accept their new path, their expressions a mix of sorrow and determination. Under Hijikata's grim, resolute leadership, they commit to fighting on, to protecting the peace, their future forged in blood and sacrifice.
EPISODE REVIEWS

I like how they were still able to insert that backstory of Oume, I liked her character. It didn't feel like the writers forced themselves to cover her in this episode. Her addition and dialogue elevated the stand-off scene a lot.

I like how Serizawa won't just go down without a fight. The art and animation here is nicely detailed. That short Taro moment was a nice addition too, but I definitely didn't expect that from Hajime.
