Seeing Griffith's body in full view for the first time really showed how much of a shell he'd become. He isn't even able to formulate responses properly. The timing is also perfect in dashing the band's hopes and dreams pilled on the IDEA of Griffith saving them.

The contrast between Guts and Griffith was jarring. They stand on opposite sides of themselves and who they used to be. Guts' new identity and self-assurance is apparent, while there is almost nothing left for Griffith. Guts' resolve to stay is also rooted in his identity/goals.
