Synopsis
When Mars was colonized, it seemed like a triumph for humanity — until children stopped being born. For over a decade, no new life, just robotic 'dolls' that serve as surrogate kids in the domed city-states scattered across the red planet. Into this bleak setting walks Layla Ashley, a stoic gladiator who fights in arena battles that determine how resources get divided among the settlements. She doesn't talk much about her past, but it clearly haunts her. Tagging along is Nei, a doll that's... different from the others in ways nobody can quite explain, and Speedy, a doll breeder who provides some lighter energy to an otherwise heavy journey. The three of them wander the desolate Martian wasteland, drawing unwanted attention from the planet's ruling powers who see something dangerous in their little group. Each confrontation peels back another layer of who Layla and Nei really are to each other. The vibe here is slow-burn and atmospheric — dusty, quiet, melancholic. Ali Project handles the soundtrack, which gives everything this eerie, theatrical edge. If you liked the moody pacing and female-led mystery of Noir (same studio, Bee Train), or the philosophical loneliness of Ergo Proxy and Texhnolyze, this sits in that neighborhood. It's only 13 episodes, so it doesn't overstay its welcome. Fair warning though: it prioritizes mood over action, so come for the atmosphere and the gradual unraveling of its world, not for wall-to-wall fight scenes.
