📖 SYNOPSIS
Imagine a samurai once got famous for something so trivial it wouldn't even make a footnote in a textbook. That's the kind of energy this show runs on. Anmari Yakunitatanai Nihonshi — roughly translating to "Not Very Useful Japanese History" — is a TV series where comedian Junpei from the duo Syrup digs up the most obscure, pointless-to-know corners of Japanese history and retells them through short animated segments. We're talking about historical figures and events that would never appear on an exam, and knowing them gives you zero practical advantage. Which, honestly, is exactly what makes it fun.
Each episode picks a different moment from Japan's past — some weird feudal lord's bizarre hobby, a forgotten incident that went nowhere — and presents it with deadpan comedic timing. It's less of a lecture and more like your funniest friend going on a tangent about something they read at 2 AM. The animation keeps things light and expressive, matching the tone perfectly.
If you liked Neko Neko Nihonshi's approach to making Japanese history approachable through comedy, or if Hetalia: Axis Powers scratched that itch of learning history through humor, this fits right in that lane. It also shares some DNA with Thermae Romae in how it finds comedy in historical settings without taking itself seriously at all.
It's low commitment, genuinely funny, and you'll walk away knowing things that are completely useless but weirdly satisfying to know.
