A Sign of Affection
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Deaf since birth, Yuki Itose lives in a pretty small world: she goes to class, hangs out with her best friend Rin, and communicates through writing and texting. It's comfortable but isolated. Then she meets Itsuomi Nagi on the train, a 22-year-old who speaks multiple languages, travels constantly, and happens to be Rin's friend. When he finds out Yuki is deaf, he doesn't get awkward or overly careful about it. He just starts learning sign language. That one detail tells you everything about what kind of romance this is. A Sign of Affection is a 12-episode TV series from Ajia-do that aired in 2024, adapted from a shoujo manga. The pacing is slow and deliberate in the best way. this isn't a show built on misunderstandings or dramatic love triangles. It's about two people figuring out how to communicate across a genuine barrier, and the animation does a lot of heavy lifting in showing what words can't. The way Yuki reads lips, the way Itsuomi's expressions shift when he's trying to reach her, it's all in the details. If you liked the emotional sincerity of A Silent Voice or the gentle character growth in Kimi ni Todoke, this fits right in that space. It also has some of that quiet ache Your Lie in April carries, though the tone stays warm throughout. Really good if you want a romance that feels grounded and earned rather than manufactured.
