The Ogre's Bride: The beautiful love between human and non-human beings

As its English name, The Ogre's Bride, and the Japanese title, Oni no Hanayome, suggest, to put it simply, this anime is all about a beautiful love story between a human and a non-human being. It is easy for us to understand the meaning of a love story, but how about the latter part: human and non-human beings?

In this unique world of The Ogre's Bride, there are humans and non-human beings. Although humans used to rule the world, they eventually broke it with their own hands, quite similar to other titles. After humans destroyed the world, non-human beings, specifically the Ayakashi, took over and rebuilt a new world.

The Ayakashi, a general term in Japanese folklore for strange, supernatural monsters, spirits, or demons, have infinite lifespans and wealth. They successfully rebuilt a beautiful new world for humans, creating a unique society where humans admire and love the Ayakashi. In fact, becoming their bride has become the biggest goal for almost every woman.

With this unique setting established, the story becomes easy to follow. The main plot of The Ogre's Bride is all about our main character, Shinonome Yuzu, an ordinary high school student, falling in love with Kiryuin Reiya, the most powerful and ruthless ogre.

Honest Review: Is The Ogre's Bride a good anime?

Since the new season's anime have been airing one by one, I have tried to gather as much information as I can, filter through it all, and share my opinions. But even though I did my "homework," I still missed this title. To be honest, The Ogre's Bride, also known as Oni no Hanayome, was never on my list, so I didn't plan to watch it.

This was never on my radar, but given its popularity in Japan, it suddenly became a hot topic online; which ultimately caught my attention. The Ogre's Bride is doing really great in Japan; it even has a live-action movie adaptation that scored over 90 out of 100 on movie rating platforms in Japan.

The live-action movie adaptation was released on March 27, 2026, and achieved amazing results in Japan. Personally, I think this is fascinating because it foreshadowed the anime's success. After it caught my attention, I watched episode 1 as fast as possible, and I think it is an incredible title we should talk more about.

To answer my question, "Is The Ogre's Bride a good anime?" My personal opinion is yes. It is definitely an interesting anime that I think everyone should give a try. The Ogre's Bride has unique setting details and top-tier voice acting. I do think everyone will get a good watching experience from it; however, I would still put a "but" in my statement.

Honest Opinion: Is The Ogre's Bride a perfect must-watch for everyone?

No anime is perfect. Although I personally think The Ogre's Bride is an amazing title that will provide a fantastic watching experience, ultimately, it is a romance anime. The Ogre's Bride is not a romantic comedy (also known as a rom-com); it is a pure romance, meaning it might suit some people while not being suitable for others.

On top of being a pure romance story, The Ogre's Bride is also a joseimuke (女性向け), a Japanese term used to refer to a category of media specifically targeted towards women. This is an important detail to notice, as joseimuke anime usually progress at a slower pace and focus heavily on romance.

Based on the opening, I think there will be some side stories, or even some conflicts among the non-human beings, but they will ultimately just be spice for the anime and won't become the main focus of The Ogre's Bride. Once again, The Ogre's Bride is a pure romance anime, so if you are looking for something else, you will be disappointed.
