Riboku is a super famous character from the epic Seinen series, Kingdom. If you have watched or read this series before, you will know this character, or even have strong feelings towards him. You may love him, hate him, or maybe even support him.

As everyone may know, Riboku is an amazing character who existed in real Chinese history, but the author, Hara Yasuhisa, actually portrayed a different Riboku for us. I am not saying the author did anything wrong, but in order to make this Seinen series so famous and maintain its popularity for so many years, he naturally had to add more "spice" to every character to make the overall story more impactful so they stay in our memories.

Kingdom and Riboku: Why Is This Character So Important to the Story?

For those who are not familiar with Kingdom, or who haven't given it a try, let me explain the relationship between Kingdom and Riboku, and how deeply connected he is to the series. Riboku is not an evil or bad character; he is a great antagonist for the main characters, Ei Sei and Ri Shin.

Ei Sei is the character who will one day become Qin Shi Huang, and Ri Shin is his best friend and a reliable partner in the unification of China. Unlike Ei Sei and Ri Shin, who stand for the state of Qin, Riboku stands for his country, Zhao. Since Ei Sei's dream is the unification of China and Riboku is someone loyal to his country, these characters are destined to fight against each other until one side loses completely.

For those who are not familiar with this title, you may wonder: why does Riboku need to fight? He could just stay away from wars and live happily without fighting against Qin again and again. Actually, Riboku is one of the most famous generals in Zhao, and he is extremely talented when it comes to warfare. Even in real history, Li Mu was so talented that he was a true nightmare for all of Qin.

If you are wondering just how talented Riboku, or the real-life Li Mu was, imagine this: even in real history, Qin couldn't defeat Zhao through direct warfare against Li Mu, so they played political games to make him disappear. Li Mu was really that strong; whenever he stepped onto the battlefield, he brought back victory.

In Kingdom, and this may be a spoiler for anime-only watchers, Riboku is also a total monster. Although he once lost to Ou Sen, Riboku ultimately secured an even bigger victory in the end, almost wiping out Ou Sen's entire army. During the famous Coalition Invasion arc, Qin seemed to pull off a huge victory against Riboku, but that defeat didn't actually hurt Zhao or Riboku all that much. They simply failed to conquer Qin, not that Qin destroyed them, those are two very different things.

Riboku and the Unification of China: The Foolish Man Who Defends Zhao to the Very End

If you have watched or read Kingdom, you have probably thought at least once or twice that Riboku is a foolish person. Indeed, whether we look at real history or Kingdom, Li Mu and Riboku consistently fight for a corrupt country for seemingly no reason. And since all of us know how history ends, we could even say that all his effort just wasn't worth it, because in the end, only a cruel fate was waiting for them.

In Kingdom, there were plenty of times when Riboku could have made different choices, or even built a new system with his own hands. Yet in the end, he always chose to stick with the status quo and fight for it. Of course, Hara Yasuhisa can't simply rewrite history, but through this long and amazing journey, we can really feel that while Riboku has accepted reality, he is also holding onto a false hope for Zhao.

Even when the throne was given to the other child, instead of completely giving up, Riboku tried to bet that the king might change because of him. To be honest, Riboku's line of thinking wasn't naive. Kings in that era didn't live very long, and the child genuinely showed a different side of himself to others, which truly lit up a spark of hope in Riboku.

Riboku is someone who deeply loves his country, and for a person like him, working under a great king would be the happiest thing imaginable. Although the current king couldn't fulfill that dream, we can't deny the fact that this vision of the future could have truly come to pass one day. I can understand his mindset, if I were Riboku, I would want to hold onto hope too. The real problem for Riboku, however, is that he didn't pay enough attention to the political battles.

In Kingdom, Riboku is a truly multi-talented figure: not only does he consistently succeed in eliminating his targets, but he also successfully protects his country from other powerful states.

Although in Kingdom it feels like only Qin and Ei Sei are aiming for the unification of China, in reality, every state is looking to expand. Every country wants to absorb its neighbour's land, so the only thing stopping them isn't morality, but power. Riboku possessed the power to protect both himself and his country for almost his entire life.

Judging by talent alone, Riboku is absolutely a terrifying monster. However, no one is born perfect, while he is a master of warfare, he is definitely weak in politics. As someone who is fiercely loyal to his country and holds strong moral values, Riboku views politics as something corrupt, believing he shouldn't participate or get overly involved in it.

Indeed, because he kept his distance from court politics, he avoided getting into too much trouble early on, but that also limited how far he could go. I understand Riboku's mindset: he simply wants his country to be safe. However, as someone who refused to get heavily involved in politics, he was unable to clear every obstacle from his path.

For someone like Riboku, the biggest enemy is never on the outside, it is on the inside. While everyone, including us readers, knows that Riboku is innocent and isn't plotting anything suspicious, those living in the same country view him differently. You can't really blame them; Riboku is a terrifying monster, even to his own people. When you possess the power to kill anyone, everyone becomes suspicious of you, and they will do whatever it takes just to protect themselves.

Riboku and Shi Ba Shou: The Unavoidable Future of Loyalty

The author of Kingdom, Hara Yasuhisa, has truly poured a lot of effort into Riboku's character, and we can really feel his depth. With the continuation of the Kingdom anime coming up in Season 6, even anime-only watchers will soon get a front-row seat to the intense political conflicts between Riboku and his own government.

Riboku also has a reliable friend who existed in real history as well, the second monster of Zhao, Shi Ba Shou. Both of them are amazing characters, and when they combine their strength, they are virtually invincible. Unfortunately, everyone knows what kind of future is waiting for them.

Both Riboku and Shi Ba Shou have tried to run away from problems they should have dealt with in the first place. They chose to ignore the corruption and darkness within their own country, focusing instead on a future that doesn't even exist. Another theme that Hara Yasuhisa portrays beautifully is the tragic irony of their perspective, while they view Ei Sei as a demon trying to destroy the world, the very monster they are currently protecting is the true demon destroying their lives.

We don't even need to debate whether Ei Sei's vision is right or wrong, because when those with power and strength refuse to look inward, it's hard to take the discussion any further. Riboku may think his kindness is saving his country, and to an extent, that's true, but the problem is that the country he is saving has already been torn in two. No matter what he does, those internal problems will always exist until he finally faces and deals with them.
