The Main Focus of Episode 7: The Last Quincy, Ishida Uryū

Ever since Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War officially premiered on October 11, 2022, discussions around it have never stopped. Even four years later, the final part, The Calamity, has become the hottest anime topic on the internet. Episode 7 is a big reason, while everyone is discussing the episode, they are also talking about one character in particular, the last Quincy, Ishida Uryū.

For those who have watched Bleach before, or if you are a fan of the series, you definitely know this character, as he is so iconic. If you haven't watched Bleach before, one thing I can share in this post is that Uryū is one of the best friends of the main character, Kurosaki Ichigo, and one of the most important characters in the Thousand-Year Blood War arc.

Uryū has appeared in Bleach from the very beginning and has been involved in various story arcs, but prior to Thousand-Year Blood War, he was never really the main focus. In this series, especially in Episode 7, he finally takes center stage and delivers an incredible performance.

Before diving deeper into Uryū's performance, it's worth noting that almost everything in Episode 7 is anime-original content. What does this mean? It means that even for those who have read the original manga, this episode offers content you've never experienced before and will definitely give you a fresh perspective, as everything in it is completely new, even for someone like me who finished the Bleach manga a long time ago!

Highlight of Episode 7: An Amazing Battle Between Yhwach and Ishida Uryū

To be honest, I didn't plan on watching Episode 7 so soon, my original plan was to wait until all the episodes aired and binge them all at once. But with the internet going so crazy over it, I decided to check it out early, and it ended up giving me an incredible viewing experience.

The main highlight, and the biggest reason people are losing their minds over Episode 7, is the incredible battle between Ishida Uryū and the main villain of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, Yhwach. As the King of Quincies, Yhwach is the one threat Ichigo and the others must defeat, no matter how dire the situation becomes.

With his broken ability, The Almighty, Yhwach has defeated countless characters, overwhelmed the Soul Society, and crushed every glimpse of Ichigo's future and hope. Yhwach has truly reached a godlike level and seems completely invincible, yet our boy Uryū managed to pull a fast one on him, which completely caught me off guard.

For those who have watched or read Bleach before, you might wonder: does Uryū really have enough power to face Yhwach? To be honest, before watching it myself, I had the exact same question, since Uryū never really achieved major victories in past battles. I thought it would be an easy win for Yhwach, but as it turns out, Uryū actually did a lot of homework before confronting him, and this episode will completely change how you view Uryū's power.

An Unexpected Result for Yhwach: What Ishida Uryū Prepared

We will discuss the details of The Almighty in another post, but for now, I just want to share how Uryū found a way to counter Yhwach's ability. The Almighty comes with a lot of complex rules, and Yhwach uses it masterfully, but at its core, it is all about destroying every possible future.

With the power of The Almighty, Yhwach is able to see into the future and perceive every possible outcome. What does that mean in practical terms? Yhwach doesn't just see a single timeline, he sees every potential future, similar to the concept of parallel worlds. This is why he could easily destroy Ichibē Hyōsube and Ichigo despite their powerful abilities, Yhwach can simply crush them in a different future, which directly impacts the present moment.

While not identical, The Almighty is quite similar to the power of another famous villain: Byakuran from Katekyo Hitman Reborn!. Both Yhwach and Byakuran can perceive parallel worlds, gather information from them, and reach a godlike status. Since their abilities are so similar, countering The Almighty works much like defeating Byakuran, by creating a future they cannot predict.

You might be thinking: what am I talking about? It may sound impossible, but it is actually achievable, and Ukitake Jūshirō already showed us how to do it. Even though Yhwach can perceive every possible future, characters can still take actions that break through its vision, and Uryū pulled this off in Episode 7.

Creating the Unpredictable: Ukitake Jūshirō and Ishida Uryū

To a certain extent, we can't deny that Yhwach's power is so broken that even Tite Kubo and the team struggled to figure out how to continue the fight. Still, Episode 7 did an absolute amazing job. The animation, the bgm, and of course, the voice acting, everything about Episode 7 is top-tier!

It's tough to completely rework the fight with Yhwach, especially since the Bleach manga officially ended back on August 22, 2016, and The Almighty is so broken that even the characters can barely handle it. In a situation like this, the best way to counter The Almighty is to create something completely unpredictable.

Although The Almighty allows Yhwach to see every possible future, characters can still take actions that break through its vision. One of the best examples is the one I mentioned earlier: Ukitake Jūshirō. The actions he took regarding the Soul King completely outsmarted Yhwach.

In Episode 7, Uryū creates an outcome Yhwach couldn't predict, one that actually ends up succeeds. While that might sound like an exaggeration, if we look at both fights carefully, there is a clear similarity: neither Ukitake Jūshirō nor Ishida Uryū were fighting solo.

The Almighty allows Yhwach to see an individual character's future, but not everyone's at once. What does that mean? It means that when characters team up, they can create outcomes Yhwach failed to predict. Every individual character's actions can be foreseen, but when they team up with others, the possibilities expand exponentially, to a point where even Yhwach can't read them.

While this might still sound like a stretch, or even a bit crazy, it actually makes a lot of sense. When a single character faces him, Yhwach has time to process and read through every potential outcome. But when a group of fighters uses their full power to charge at him simultaneously, he can't react fast enough, ultimately leaving an opening for his enemies.

The only type of anime fan I wouldn't recommend it to is someone who genuinely dislikes the Shounen genre. No matter how incredible the Thousand-Year Blood War series is, it remains a Shounen story at its heart, so if that style isn't for you, it might not hold your interest. But if you enjoy or even just tolerate Shounen, please give it a shot. I am certain it will give you an amazing viewing experience!
