Roll Over and Die Ep 1 Review 8.2/10
Roll Over and Die is a series I picked up on a whim based on a reddit post I saw. It is a gritty, dark anime where the main character suffers from unfortunate things happening to her quite a bit, but she never loses hope despite it all. Oh, and it’s also a yuri series as well. Dark yuri battle anime is a very rare concept but that’s exactly what we’re being promised here, and I cannot wait to see more.
Overall: 8.2/10
Music: 9/10
Opening: “Liberator” by PassCode: Dark, gritty metal start with a promise of emotion, darkness, and gore. Has more emotional depth as the song goes on but those opening riffs set the tone for the series as a whole. Definitely worthy of being added to playlists.
Ending: “I need” by Yuki Tanaka Pretty and hopeful, very opposite of what the anime itself is, but that’s of course what’s needed after seeing some depressing stuff. It has the potential to be added to playlists, but I need to sit with it for longer to decide that.
The OST stands out a bit as well. Some unsettling music is good to have for a story like this.
Art Style: 7.5/10
Art Style is unique to a dark, gritty fantasy yuri. They do not shy away from blood and gore and darker themes, which is key for a horror anime. Very excited to see where this goes.
Setting/Worldbuilding: 8/10
Very unique setting, a dark and gritty yuri story doesn’t come around very often. Not only that, but the main character’s ability of reversal is interesting when put in practice and I think there is potential for the story to get much grittier, although I do hope for moments of happiness for the characters, even though the world is designed to work against that.
Characters: 8/10
The protagonist Flum, is plain and unassuming but is resilient and willing to fight for survival.
Her partymates betrayed her and sold her into slavery. Flum thought Cyrill was a kindred spirit and friend, but she stood by as Jean sold her into her horrible fate of slavery. Jean, however is revealed to have lied to the entire party about what happened with Flum. Meanwhile Jean just wants to be with Cyrill and saw Flum as competition.
Milkit is a girl that lived her whole life as a slave, to the point where she doesn’t want to go with Flum unless Flum accepts being her master.
Plot: 8.5/10
Flum Apricot, the MC, is in the hero’s party on a mission to defeat the demon lord but is sold into slavery by one of the party members, Jean, because he sees her as trash. The slaver ends up giving her a choice: die from being eaten by ghouls or fight back with a cursed sword. She chooses to fight back and, without realizing, activates her reversal skill. Freeing herself and fellow slave companion Milkit, she begins the journey to survive in a very screwed up world.
It is revealed that the party is not aware of what Jean did to Flum and that may cause more tension down the road.
