World Trigger

Four years ago, interdimensional creatures called Neighbors invaded Mikado City, and everyone just kind of learned to live with it. There's a whole defense organization called Border that fights them using special weapons called Triggers, powered by an energy called Trion. Into this setup walks Osamu Mikumo, a low-ranking Border trainee who's earnest but not exactly powerful, and Yūma Kuga, a transfer student who turns out to be a Neighbor himself — one of the very things Border exists to fight. The two end up forming an unlikely partnership, with Osamu trying to help Yūma stay under the radar while figuring out where his own loyalties should lie. What makes World Trigger different from most shounen is that it leans hard into tactical, team-based combat instead of power-of-friendship solo victories. Fights play out almost like chess matches where positioning, team composition, and strategy matter more than who can scream the loudest. The power system around Trion and Triggers has real depth to it, and the show doesn't shy away from the moral grey areas of the human-Neighbor conflict. If you liked the military structure and moral weight of Attack on Titan, or the squad dynamics and ranked battles from Bleach's Soul Society arc, this scratches a similar itch. It's slower to start than something like Blue Exorcist, but the payoff in how the battles escalate is genuinely worth the patience. Toei Animation handles the adaptation, based on the manga, and it's a solid entry point for anyone wanting strategic action over pure spectacle.
