Wanpaku! Touken Ranbu
Oshimeter
Synopsis
What happens when you hand the massive Touken Ranbu franchise — where historical Japanese swords are personified as handsome warriors — to Sanrio? Yeah, the Hello Kitty people. That's basically the pitch for Wanpaku! Touken Ranbu. Instead of the usual battlefield drama, these legendary sword boys get the full Sanrio treatment, reimagined in an adorable chibi style with a comedy-first approach. Think less epic sword fights, more chaotic slice-of-life energy with historically-inspired characters just being goofy little guys together. The whole thing spun out of a mixed-media collaboration announced in early 2024, and honestly the concept alone is kind of irresistible. There's something genuinely funny about taking characters who are normally drawn as serious, beautiful warriors and turning them into round little dudes getting into lighthearted shenanigans. The comedy leans into the absurdity of that contrast pretty naturally. If you liked Touken Ranbu Hanamaru for its softer, more relaxed take on the franchise, this dials that energy up even further. And if you're into stuff like Sanrio Danshi or any of those comedy shorts where cool characters get deflated into cute versions of themselves — like the chibi segments in Attack on Titan: Junior High — this is right in that lane. You don't need deep lore knowledge to enjoy it. Sometimes you just want anthropomorphic swords being adorable, and there's nothing wrong with that.
