Synopsis

Half human, half vampire, D is a dhampir and one of the most feared bounty hunters in a far-future world where vampires once ruled everything but are now being hunted to extinction. When a wealthy family hires him to rescue their daughter Charlotte, who's been taken by the noble vampire Meier Link, D sets out across a gothic wasteland full of supernatural horrors. But there's a catch: a rival crew of bounty hunters called the Marcus Brothers are after the same bounty, and the deeper D gets into the mission, the less clear it becomes whether Charlotte actually wants to be rescued. This is a Madhouse movie from 2000, and it still looks gorgeous. The character designs come from Yoshitaka Amano, the same artist behind the classic Final Fantasy artwork, so everything has this elegant, almost painterly quality to it. The world blends far-future sci-fi with deep gothic horror in a way that feels completely its own. Marco D'Ambrosio's soundtrack sets a mood that's brooding and melancholic, and the story threads romance through all the action and monster-slaying in a way that actually lands emotionally. If you liked the dark atmosphere of Berserk or the vampire hunting in Hellsing, this fits right in that space. Fans of Claymore's lone-warrior-against-monsters vibe will feel at home too. It's one movie, about 100 minutes, self-contained, no homework required. Just a beautifully crafted, bittersweet dark fantasy that holds up remarkably well.
