True Blue
Oshimeter
Synopsis
On the surface, Kanzaki Aoi has it all — the school idol, deeply in love with her childhood friend and next-door neighbor Akito, their relationship feels like the kind of quiet, comfortable romance built on years of trust and shared memories. Then a faculty member enters the picture, and everything starts to unravel in ways neither of them saw coming. True Blue is a 2-episode OVA from 2005 that leans hard into the drama of watching something precious get torn apart. The core of it is genuinely compelling: two people who grew up together, who have real history, suddenly facing something that tests whether that bond can hold under serious pressure. The character work is stronger than you might expect for something this short — Aoi and Akito feel like actual people rather than placeholders, which makes the tension land harder. The animation holds up well for the era, and the pacing keeps things moving without rushing past the emotional beats. If you've watched something like Bible Black or Discipline and appreciated when a story bothers to make you care about the characters before things get intense, True Blue operates in that same space. It's darker in tone than the soft setup initially suggests, so go in knowing it doesn't stay light. For a two-episode runtime, it covers more emotional ground than most manage in four.
