Overall, this had the makings of a great war anime. However, there were corners cut with the animation, with the action sequences, and with the general story. If it was given a different director or remade with a proper studio's support, I think it could be done in a way that could give justice to the original IP and also be a decent enough standalone anime. Because if not, you're relying on a lot of previous assumed knowledge and fanbase from the original IP.
