The Snake: Become Human
Oshimeter
Synopsis
After spending centuries mastering Taoist cultivation just to become human, a white snake spirit who's lived for a thousand years finally descends into the mortal world — and the first thing she does is fall for a pharmacist she meets in the rain. Bai Suzhen has finally shed her serpentine form and descended into the mortal world of ancient Hangzhou, accompanied by Xiaoqing, her green snake companion who's about 500 years younger and considerably less patient with humans. By West Lake, during a rainstorm, Bai Suzhen crosses paths with Xu Xian, a gentle physician, and what starts as a borrowed umbrella becomes something neither of them can walk away from. The catch, obviously, is that she's not human, and this version of ancient China has monks and exorcists who take that sort of thing personally. This ONA draws from one of Chinese folklore's most beloved legends, and the animation genuinely earns the source material — think sweeping ink-wash landscapes brought to life with fluid action sequences, all backed by a soundtrack that weaves traditional Chinese instruments into something that hits harder than you'd expect. The Taoist cultivation power system gives the supernatural elements a grounded logic that feels distinct from typical magic systems. If you liked the folklore-meets-romance energy of Inuyasha or the way Spirited Away handles the boundary between human and spirit worlds, this sits in a similar space. Fans of Natsume's Book of Friends will appreciate the quieter emotional beats woven between the action. It's romantic, it's mythic, and it knows exactly what story it wants to tell.
