What first caught my attention was the unusual mix of an ordinary, food-loving protagonist, supernatural summoning, comedy, and large-scale battles. The premise worked well by giving the protagonist an identity outside the usual formula. Focused primarily on everyday life and cooking rather than seeking adventure or power, his sudden involvement with the supernatural felt refreshing. The ability to summon a wide variety of entities created creative possibilities, contrasting ordinary surroundings with bizarre encounters and hinting at a much larger world. Character dynamics were a major strength. The main supernatural companion brought early energy and comedy, and her playful, unpredictable personality created a fun contrast with the grounded protagonist. Their interactions, especially around everyday situations and food humor, anchored the series as the plot grew serious. The supporting cast had potential with diverse summoners and spirits, though many felt underexplored due to limited screen time. World-building was a weaker area. The mythology surrounding summoning factions was interesting, but the narrative often introduced information faster than it could develop it. Pacing and structure were also problematic; the early mix of comedy and everyday life transitioned abruptly into heavy conflict and battles, causing some emotional weight and dramatic developments to feel unearned. The protagonist, while enjoyable, suffered from inconsistent development and abilities that occasionally felt overly convenient. Visually, the show offered colorful character designs and appealing background details, but the animation lacked consistency. Stiff character movement and action scenes lacking spatial clarity made characters occasionally feel detached from their environments. However, the comedy landed well, using lighthearted moments and cooking elements to prevent the series from feeling generic. The writing left significant potential unrealized, relying at times on familiar conventions rather than fully fleshed-out ideas. Yet, the emotional impact worked during key relationship moments, and the soundtrack successfully complemented both comedic and intense scenes. Ultimately, The Last Summoner is an entertaining but uneven fantasy donghua. Its strengths lie in its unusual premise, colorful cast, comedy, and character chemistry, while its weaknesses involve inconsistent animation, rushed world-building, and uneven pacing. Despite its rougher aspects, it possessed enough charm, creativity, and identity to make the experience worthwhile.
