The Deer King

I don't know why, but this movie doesn't feel like a typical Japanese animated film that I've watched before. It has a remarkably solid, mature plot with well-developed characters. I especially appreciate how maturely the characters react to situations and express their emotions without being overly dramatic or cringeworthy. The world-building is another major strength. I really enjoyed how the film explores the relationship between individuals and the larger community, different groups and clans, as well as the contrast between the power of a single person and the influence of authority and established institutions. Overall, this movie was a very pleasant surprise. I just wish I still had as much time to watch and review movies as I used to.

I really liked it, vi sually, it’s a beautiful movie, and at its core, it delivers a very raw journey about finding unity in the face of extreme adversity. The dynamic between the main characters and how they survive such a harsh world together is definitely the highlight of the film.

This film was such an underrated experience. The animation, emotional scenes, and story was so engaging to see Van go through so much just for Yuna and himself.

The animation is excellent, especially the natural landscapes and wildlife, giving the movie a grand, immersive atmosphere.

Episode 1 opens with a gripping escape from the salt mines. Van's determination to protect the young girl Yuna after the mysterious wolf attack creates an emotional hook, while the strange illness adds an intriguing layer of mystery.
