Slave Market
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Working as a Venetian government informant, Casius finds himself visiting the sprawling, opulent city of Constanivole, where his old friend Falco has a particular tour in mind — the local slave market, where captured women are auctioned off to wealthy men who can afford them. Casius wants no part of it at first, but ends up buying several of the women himself, reasoning it's better than leaving them to whoever else is bidding. Whether that makes him a hero or just a man rationalizing something dark is kind of the whole tension the story sits with. The setting is genuinely interesting — a fictional world drawing heavily from Venetian and Byzantine aesthetics, which gives it a grounded, historical texture you don't always get in this genre. It's not just a backdrop; the city and its power structures actually matter to the story's moral atmosphere. This is a 3-episode OVA from 2002 adapted from a visual novel, so the narrative is compact and character-focused rather than sprawling. If you've watched Kuroinu or Taimanin Asagi and you're drawn to stories that place dark subject matter inside a developed world with actual plot stakes, this sits in similar territory. It's not trying to be subtle about what it is, but there's more narrative framing here than you might expect. Go in knowing the tone is deliberately heavy and morally uncomfortable — that's the point.
