Coming off 'Rumors' (Episode 8), which destabilized Lain's sense of self through misinformation and fractured identity, 'Protocol' shifts into world-building mode, laying out the conceptual framework that the final act depends on. As Episode 9 of 13, this is the hinge point of the series—everything before it was setup, and everything after builds toward resolution.
