Synopsis

When five boys set foot in a formerly all-girls prestigious boarding school, they find themselves outnumbered 200 to 1. Naturally, they try to peep on the girls' bath. Naturally, they get caught. Their punishment? Actual prison, a detention block on school grounds run by the Underground Student Council, a group of terrifyingly authoritative women who make their lives a living hell. That's the setup for Prison School, and it only gets more absurd from there. What makes this 12-episode TV series work is how seriously it takes itself. The dramatic framing, the intense close-ups, the swelling music, it's all played completely straight, like you're watching a high-stakes thriller about five idiots trying to survive their sentence and maybe, just maybe, break out. Kiyoshi and his friends, the history-obsessed Gakuto, the loyal Shingo, the mysterious Joe, and the masochistic Andre, each bring their own brand of chaos. J.C.Staff nailed the manga's exaggerated art style, with facial expressions that look like they belong in a horror anime rather than a comedy. Fair warning: this is ecchi seinen through and through. If that's not your thing, steer clear. But if you enjoyed the crude humor of Grand Blue or the absurd boundary-pushing of Shimoneta, Prison School operates in that same wheelhouse, just with more dramatic tension and way more sweat. Seitokai Yakuindomo fans might also appreciate the student council dynamic, though this one goes considerably harder.
