Persona 3 the Movie: #2 Midsummer Knight's Dream
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Every night, Makoto Yuuki presses a gun to his own head and pulls the trigger to summon a supernatural being that fights monsters. If that premise hooked you in the first Persona 3 movie, this second film picks up right where it left off and raises the stakes considerably. Summer hits, and SEES — the squad of high schoolers battling Shadows during a hidden hour at midnight — finally gets some downtime in Yakushima. That lasts about five minutes before a new threat shows up: Strega, a rival group of Persona users who actually want the Dark Hour to keep existing. On top of that, the team picks up Aegis, an android with no memories who latches onto Makoto for reasons she can't explain. The dynamic between her mechanical earnestness and Makoto's emotional detachment is one of the more interesting character threads in the film. A-1 Pictures keeps the action sequences sharp — the Persona summons look great on a movie budget — but the real draw here is how the story layers in mystery around what the Dark Hour actually is and why Strega wants to protect it. If you liked the atmosphere of Fate/Zero or the supernatural team dynamics in Blue Exorcist, this hits a similar groove. You do need to watch the first movie before this one, though. It's a direct continuation, not a standalone, and the character relationships only land if you've seen the setup.
