This one felt like it should’ve had more time to breathe. It followed Koyanagi after something heavy in his life and showed him struggling while getting pulled into another situation. The main idea was good, but it moved too fast and some parts didn’t get enough time to really land. It still worked in a few emotional moments, but it felt a bit rushed and like it needed more space to tell the story properly. Worth watching, but it felt like it could’ve been better with more time.

The emotional core is strong. Koyanagi's grief is real. His gamble is desperate. And Heizo's quiet mercy is beautiful. One thing that really got me: the idea that saving a family he destroyed is his redemption. It's not clean. It's not easy. But it's right.

Episode Context

The penultimate episode of Onihei pulls away from Hasegawa to spotlight Koyanagi, one of the Arson Theft Control's dedicated officers. Expect a deliberately paced, introspective hour that trades action set pieces for moral weight. The episode interrogates what duty costs the people who carry it out, Koyanagi's internal conflict between compassion and obligation drives the narrative, and the result is one of the series' most contemplative entries. Edo-period atmosphere is thick here, with societal pressures bearing down on every decision. This is character-study storytelling at its most focused: quiet tension over spectacle, ethical gray areas over clean resolutions. If you've appreciated Onihei's willingness to let supporting cast carry entire episodes, this one rewards that patience. A slow burn designed to land emotionally before the finale arrives.
