Old folklore holds that a tattoo drawn to perfection will come to life. That's an interesting piece of folklore until thirteen mafia members turn up slaughtered by something enormous, and the only survivor is a quiet young woman named Ema Nozomi with a strangely detailed demon tattooed on her skin. Detective Reiko Kure is left holding a case that makes no sense — no conventional weapon, no clear motive, just carnage and one shell-shocked witness. When Ema gets placed into protective custody, things get worse. Every man guarding her ends up dead. Every woman ends up assaulted. And nobody can explain how or why. The tattoo is the only thread Reiko has to pull on. This four-episode OVA from AIC leans hard into dark supernatural horror, building genuine dread around the mystery of what Ema actually is and what that tattoo is doing. The dynamic between the driven detective and the seemingly helpless Ema carries surprising tension. If you've seen Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend or something like Mezzo Forte and you're familiar with how late-90s and early-2000s horror OVAs operate — adult content, grim atmosphere, creature-driven violence — you'll know what territory this occupies. It's not comfortable viewing, and it doesn't try to be. The premise is genuinely unsettling, and for fans of that specific era of dark supernatural anime, Oni-Tensei delivers exactly what it promises.
